The following list is our own opinion and experience. To decide the best gym for you, the first thing to do is assess what your goals are and what's your training style. Or if you just want the list, go all the way down.
Embarking on a fitness journey is an exciting step towards a healthier lifestyle, and selecting the right gym plays a crucial role in your success. With a multitude of options out there, choosing the gym that aligns with your needs, preferences, and goals can make your fitness experience more enjoyable and effective. Here's a non-technical guide to help you navigate the process and find the best gym for you.
1. Location, Location, Location:
• Consider the proximity of the gym to your home, workplace, or regular hangout spots. A gym that's conveniently located makes it easier to stick to your fitness routine, as you won't have to go out of your way to get there, check on the map to see which gyms are near you or on your way, for example on your way to or from work, or near your kids' school so you can have a workout while you wait for them to finish school.
2. Atmosphere and Vibe, USE THE GYMS FREE DAY:
• Walk into the gym and take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. All gyms offer a free day or more to try it, use these free days as an opportunity to try the gym and have a feel. Does it feel welcoming and motivating? Consider the gym's vibe and whether it matches your personality. Some gyms are high-energy and bustling, while others may have a more laid-back and friendly feel.
3. Equipment Variety:
• Assess the variety of equipment available. A well-equipped gym should have a mix of cardio machines, weightlifting equipment, and functional training spaces. Make sure the gym provides the tools you need for the specific workouts you enjoy.
4. Cleanliness and Maintenance:
• A clean and well-maintained gym not only promotes hygiene but also reflects the gym's commitment to member satisfaction. Check the cleanliness of the equipment, locker rooms, and common areas. An organized and tidy gym enhances your overall experience.
5. Membership Options and Fees:
• Explore the membership options and pricing plans. Some gyms offer flexible memberships, including month-to-month or annual plans. Consider your budget and how well the membership options align with your financial position.
6. Class Offerings:
• If you enjoy group workouts or structured classes, inquire about the gym's class offerings. Many gyms provide a variety of classes, from yoga and spin to high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Check if the class schedule aligns with your availability.
7. Staff Friendliness and Expertise:
• Interact with the staff and trainers. Friendly and knowledgeable staff can make your gym experience more enjoyable. If you have questions or need assistance, approachability and expertise are key factors.
8. Trial Memberships and Guest Passes:
• Before committing, see if the gym offers trial memberships or guest passes, most gyms do. This allows you to experience the gym firsthand and determine if it suits your preferences and workout style.
9. 24/7 Access:
• Some gyms provide 24/7 access, offering flexibility for those with busy schedules or unconventional workout times. If having access at any hour is important to you, inquire about the gym's operating hours.
10. Community and Social Aspect:
• Evaluate the community aspect of the gym. Some fitness centres foster a sense of community through events, challenges, or social spaces. If a supportive and social atmosphere is important to you, consider how the gym encourages community engagement.
